Il pranzo natalizio della Gestione Sportiva Ferrari con i rappresentanti dei media è un’occasione per farsi gli auguri, dopo un anno vissuto assieme sui circuiti, ma è anche l’opportunità per rivedere i momenti salienti di una stagione ricca di avvenimenti.
“Considerando da dove siamo partiti l’anno scorso – è il bilancio del presidente Sergio Marchionne – in questa stagione abbiamo fatto passi da gigante. Detto questo, la seconda metà del 2017 è stata… una di quelle che formano il carattere. Abbiamo imparato molto negli ultimi sei mesi, cerchiamo di andare avanti. La cosa importante è questa. Da quando abbiamo ribaltato la struttura, nell’agosto dell’anno scorso, avevo una fiducia totale sul fatto che questi ragazzi, con Maurizio Arrivabene come team principal e Mattia Binotto alla direzione tecnica, avrebbero fatto qualcosa di straordinario. Siamo totalmente convinti che potevamo fare molto di più: avevamo aspettative che non siamo riusciti a concludere nel 2017. Questo ha portato anche a dei cambiamenti alla struttura della Gestione Sportiva. Già vediamo dei segnali di cambiamento importanti per quanto riguarda la capacità produttiva della squadra. La cosa importante è partire dal 2018 con tutto questo bagaglio di esperienze e gestire questa struttura. Non ho dubbi sul fatto che saremo competitivi”.
Il discorso si estende, naturalmente, ai piloti: “Sebastian Vettel è un ragazzo che studia molto, studia se stesso e si impegna, quindi credo che nel 2018 la parte più emotiva non la vedremo. Credo abbia imparato abbastanza. Poi, le occasioni per incavolarsi non è che gli siano mancate, ha avuto un paio di stagioni, sia quest’anno che l’anno prima, piuttosto difficili. Io continuo a dire che noi abbiamo un obbligo verso questi piloti, di dar loro delle macchine capaci di gareggiare con le altre. Nel 2017 credo che gli abbiamo dato una gran macchina e quindi, d’ora in poi, la responsabilità è sua. Quanto a Kimi Raikkonen, io credo sia una grandissima persona, con un grandissimo talento. Non ho mai dubitato delle sue capacità. È un grande, ve lo dico. Altrimenti non avrebbe fatto la pole position su una pista come Montecarlo. Io credo che Maurizio abbia fatto un grandissimo lavoro con i piloti, e non è un lavoro facile”.

The Gestione Sportiva Ferrari Christmas lunch with members of the media is a time for exchanging season’s greetings after a year spent together at the race tracks. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to look back at the key moments of what was an action packed championship.
“Given where we started from last year, this season we have taken giant strides forward – was president Sergio Marchionne’s overview – Having said that, the second half of 2017 was…character building. We learned a lot over the past six months, trying to move forward and that’s the most important thing. From back in August of last year, when we overhauled the organisation, I totally believed that these guys, with Maurizio Arrivabene as team principal and Mattia Binotto heading up the technical side, would be capable of doing something amazing. We really believed we could do much more: but in 2017, we were unable to reach our objectives. That has also resulted in some changes to the organisation of the Gestione Sportiva. We can already see significant signs of change when it comes to the team’s production capacity. The important thing is to start 2018 with all this expertise and experience and to manage this organisation. I have no doubt that we will be competitive”.
Naturally enough, the conversation moved on to the subject of the drivers: “Sebastian Vettel is a guy who studies a lot, studies himself and is committed, therefore, I think that we will see less of his emotive side. I think he has learned enough. Plus, there were plenty of opportunities for him to get annoyed, as he’s had a couple of rather difficult seasons, this year and the previous one. I continue to maintain we have an obligation towards these drivers, to give them a car with which they can race the others. I think we gave them a great car in 2017 and so, from now on, it’s down to him. As for Kimi Raikkonen, I believe he is really great, truly talented and I have never doubted his abilities. I tell you, he’s a really top guy, otherwise he wouldn’t have taken pole at a track like Monaco. I think Maurizio has done a great job with the drivers and that’s not an easy task”.
